When you hold the power button while turning it on instead of just tapping it, the ps3 should start with the connected cable and ask you if this is correct or not (something like: "a hdmi-cable was recognized, is this correct?").

If the ps3 starts in safe-mode, you probably did hold the powerbutton to long (but i'm not so sure about this).
